Meeting Minutes: November 2015

The following e-mail was sent November 27, 2015.  After discussion, seven board members voted in favor of adding Ruth Reinhart to the Board of Directors.  There were no votes opposed.

David Braden, Secretary

It has been July since I last updated you on the status of the Corporation.  In August I was hospitalized for bronchitis and spent September and October learning about and adjusting to my emphysema.  I am now permanently on oxygen but I do not expect that to change my ability to pursue the goals of LSI.

There is only one issue on which we require a vote.  Please see item 5 below.

We held 3 events in these past months.  We worked on the gutter and swale for the seasonal chicken run.

we refilled the growing beds in the food cell and planted the cool season crops and we held the 5th Principles of Community Design Workshop.  We have only made a couple of hundred bucks in this time but then we are not spending anything either.  We also earned about $90 from our participation in the "Search for Sustainability" series.  I will do a financial report shortly after the end of the year.

Here is where we are on the various projects:

1. The new web site is live and I am in process of transferring the content.  I am pleased with the way it looks and the ease of managing the content.  I think it will serve us well when we develop projects that can attract funding.

2. In the last e-meeting I updated you on the status of efforts to produce a video for the home page of the web site.  All the resources that were in place to accomplish that evaporated so I went ahead and had Leo redo the homepage without the video in it.  I still think the capacity to produce video of our projects would be valuable but I am reluctant to invest my time in trying to learn to do it myself.

3. I was elected to the Board of Directors of the Denver Permaculture Guild at their annual meeting in September.  I am hoping that they will continue to develop capacity and soon take over coordination of the High Plains Plant Propagation Cooperative.  There may also be other opportunities for joint events that may bring in some income.

4. Starting November 29, I will be conducting an online version of the Principles of Community Design workshop on facebook.  This is an experiment in using social media for educational purposes.  The first 16 members of the group I set up for the online workshop will be assigned the concepts in sequence and we will proceed to discuss all thirty three concepts until the conversation runs down.  There are only 5 participants signed up so far.  If any of the board members would like to participate that would be great.  If you have not participated in a live event I would highly recommend it.

5. Our good friend and team member, Ruth Reinhart, recently began a new career as a Unitarian Minister.  Ruth is interested in creating an intentional community that works together to provide for themselves based on a drug rehabilitation program and alternative community in which she was involved as a youth called Synanon:

Her ideas fit nicely with a program I used to call a Community Investment Enterprise.  Instead of a neighborhood owning the capacity to provide for itself, a Community Investment Enterprise is an intentional community owning the capacity to provide for itself.  Ruth and I have been talking about working together to pursue the project.  We have talked about setting up this project as a project of LSI and using our tax exempt status.  I would like to invite Ruth to join the Board.

Please respond with your vote of; Yes, to add Ruth to the Board or; No, do not add Ruth to the Board.

As always, thank you for improving our habitat and let me know your thoughts on what we are doing.
